Wolf Creek Trestle Hike 3/22/14

EG: 87' 10.5miles

Saturday we took my partners mom out for a nice hike along the Tillamook rails from Cochran pond to the Wolf Creek trestle. When we got the TH, I was attempting to get my bearings and ended up with my first official meeting of a fellow PH'ers, Rustygoat and Melinda :) We chatted for a bit and then hit the rail, or I mean trail ;)

It was a crisp 37 out in the shade.

There were a few other people out on the rail, including a rather large group that was getting organized when we left the TH.
There was a lot of litter around (we collected a garbage bag full on the way out). Some of it is becoming part of the landscape.

There was a lot of graffiti in random spots on this hike.

There are a lot of areas where there have been washouts or partial washouts along the tracks, but you can either safely walk on the tracks still, or walk around.

After about 2 miles, you come to the first tunnel. There is a small portion of the track that the land has washed out under, but you can easily walk around this section.

There are a few sections along the rail, where there have been rock slides, landslides and washouts. But there is plenty of room to navigate around all of these.

Next, we came to the Big Baldwin Trestle. We discovered that mom has a bit of a fear of heights, but she crossed the trestle with no problem.

After crossing the trestle, I decided to hunt for the memorial that I had read about. It took a bit of hunting, but I found it. It was marked by a piece of orange ribbon tied to a branch.

then Cher found this about 100' down
In hunting for the memorial, I discovered how dangerous tiny alder tress can be. I was whipped and tripped up by them a few times.
there were old railroad relics everywhere
We got back on the trail and just before the second tunnel, we found a nice area above the river to have lunch.

We opted to walk around this section
After lunch, we went on to the second tunnel and quickly came to the Wolf Creek trestle. Mom decided she would not join us in checking out the second trestle as the first one was enough for her.

We went down to the next washout area around the corner from the trestle and decided to turn around, as not to leave mom alone for too long

We only saw a few wildflowers

But the amount of mushrooms/fungi made up for no flowers

The snail must have found better digs
We headed back and the trail was a lot sunnier than on the way down. We ran into Rustygoat and Melinda a few more times (they were doing some off-trail exploring), as well as a few other people we enjoyed chatting with a few times along the way.

On the way out to 26, we stopped for a few minutes and chatted with the local bison in town.

It was a great trip. I will be excited to hear what comes of the official rails-to-trail conversion. I saw they were having some planning meetings this month, so we shall see.

Trillium Lake Snowshoe 3/1/14

6 miles  EG:600'

We got up early and headed up to Mt Hood for some snowshoeing.  We decided to head to Trillium Lake for the morning.  Diego decided that after his long day at daycare the precious day, he was happy just staying in bed and being a lazy pup for the day.

We arrived at the TH at about 830 and were on the trail by 845. We were surprised that there were only about 10 other cars in the lot when we arrived.

All bundled up

We waited to put on our snowshoes until we passed the road gate, as there wasn't much snow in the parking-lot.
As we were donning our gear, a mom/dad/small daughter walked up to us with a mini snowboard and asked if people snowboarded here.  The mom was walking around in slacks and stiletto heels and the dad seemed a little clueless.  We told them that the only hill here is really right at the beginning and it probably wouldn't be a good idea to have the little one learn to snowboard down it.  We directed them to the snow-bunny park across the highway and said they might have better luck over there.

There were only a few others that were getting started when we were.  We headed down the hill on our short adventure.

we saw a few groups of cross country skiers

and a few sled dogs in training
The trail was in good shape.  The snow was pretty compact, but not too icy.
We had fun comparing the scenery this year to the two trips we had last year.  The lower snow level was pretty noticeable, especially near the road gates.  We remembered that we didn't even see them last year because they were covered in snow.
We decided to go to the shelter at the day-use area and enjoy some hot cocoa and an early lunch.  Within a minute of taking off our gear and breaking out the food, the little camp robbers (AKA Grey Jays) were working their cuteness to try and score some food.

While we were eating, a group of three skiers came in and enjoyed the shelter with us.  They had a lab with them that enjoyed stalking the birds.

After about an hour, we decided to head back.  We stopped at the boat ramp for a quick lake picture.

On the way out, there were a lot more people than we encountered on the way in.  We were glad that we had gotten an early start.

The parking lot was pretty full when we got back to the car.  We took off our wet outer-layers and hopped in to the warm car.

a little build-up while we were away
We were both starting to get hungry, so we decided to have an early dinner and stopped by The Skyway Bar and Grill in Zigzag.  We enjoyed the atmosphere and the food.

appetizer of beer-cheese soup and frickles(fried prickles)
Apparently I thought I was really hungry, because I ordered a cup of soup and  frickles for an appetizer and then a bacon-cheese burger with a fried egg.  Cher got the Mac and Cheese with bacon.  By the time we were done with the soup and frickles, we were stuffed, so took the rest home for supper.
